Abstract
The localized deformation of sheet strips of mild steel and aluminum with various thicknesses, subjected to uniaxial tension, are experimentally investigated by the use of the Moire fringe method. These results are compared with theoretical ones calculated by the use of the elastic-plastic finite element method, considering the effect of large deformation on the basis of J2-flow theory and Gotoh's vertex theory. The upper limit of thickness to the development of the shear-band type local necking is found to be dependent on the material properties. Gotoh's vertex theory predicts localized necking in a diffusely necked thin strip, thus clearly verifying its effectiveness over a large deformation range.
