Abstract
In order to obtain a dynamic stress expression in a finite body subiected to an impact load, a theoretical study and experimental studies using PMMA rod specimens were carried out. An impact load generated a complicated dynamic stress state in a finite rod. The stress waveform then depended on the specimen length and the supporting conditions at both ends. The stress attenuation during wave propagation was also considered. Including these influences, the expressions of dynamic stress were derived for impact compression and torsion. The coefficient of reflection at the ends of a rod and the attenuation coefficient were evaluated in terms of the strain gage method. Theoretical results given in the available form showed fairly good agreement with the experimental results.
