Abstract
The present paper deals with the strength characteristics of a T-type butt adhesive joint combined with bolts in which two T-flanges are clamped by two sets of nuts and bolts using an initial clamping force after they are joined by an adhesive. Firstly, the stress distributions in the adhesive, the variation of bolt axial force and the strength of the combination joint when an external bending moment is applied are analyzed. For verification, experiments are performed. The analytical results are in fairly good agreement with the experimental ones. It is found that the strength of the combination joint is greater than that of the adhesive joint and that the combination joint is maintained by bolts after the adhesive layer is ruptured. The characteristics and the usefulness of the combination joint are clarified.
