Abstract
Global buckling is defined as the static instability of a truss structure as a whole, without member buckling. We discuss an optimal design of a truss structure taking account of the global buckling as well as the local member buckling. A resource-based optimal design approach based on the local member conditions and the global buckling modes are proposed. Example optimal designs are carried out and the obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed optimization approach.
