Abstract
Recently, the brake noise reduction is one of the most important environmental issues for railway passenger transportation. In this study, a friction-induced self-excited oscillation and accompanying noise of a tread brake system were experimentally investigated by using a brake dynamometer. The dynamic behavior of both composition brake shoe and brake shoe head were measured by using accelerometer, and then a negative damping ratio of the system was evaluated. In order to suppress brake squeal successfully, a passive damping augmentation device is required. According to the identified negative damping ratio of the brake system, a simple oil damper attachment for the system was proposed. The experimental brake test results demonstrated the brake squeal suppression capability of the proposed damper.
