Abstract
Steer by wire technology in automobile will bring feasibility of complex steering control that is impossible to carry out until now. If characteristics of steering system, which is fixed at present time, can be changed timely, it may assist a novice driver in his/her emergency driving. The objective of this paper is to find the possibility that lane change performance is improved with a variable characteristics steering system. Effect of a proportional, a differential and an integral control element on vehicle motion and steering behavior in emergency lane change are studied by computer simulation.
