Abstract
In this paper, we describe the response characteristics of vortex-induced vibration and random vibration of a circular cylinder behind another cylinder of five times larger diameter. Free vibration tests of an elastic circular cylinder whose both ends were clamped were conducted in a water tunnel for three different relative locations of the upstream cylinder as well as single cylinder tests. The onset flow velocities of in-line vortex-induced vibration and response amplitudes of random vibration obtained by the tests were compared with values predicted using the JSME standard 012-1998 to verify the evaluation methods in the guideline.
