Abstract

It is important that natural vibration is appropriately considered in structural designs for reducing noise and vibration. One of the most commonly used prediction methods for natural vibration is eigenvalue analysis based on finite element analysis (FEA). However, since this method does not consider the formation process of natural vibration, structural engineers have to design the natural vibration through trial and error. This paper proposes an eigenmode shape design method based on 3D wave analysis. First, the reflected and transmitted waves in a general three-dimensional beam structure were computed using a ray trace method. Summations of the computed wave vectors coincided with the eigenmode vectors of the structure. This method is capable of clarifying the formation of natural vibration, which is not possible using conventional FEA. The proposed method was then used to discuss the formation of the 1st bending mode shape of block geometry.
