Abstract
This paper presents a proposed method for the characteristics estimation of carving turns using information obtained from a skier gliding on the actual snow field. The gliding velocity changes according to the rotational motion of a skier in turns. In the previous study, we constructed the turn model that represents the relation between the gliding velocity and the transverse and vertical components of control force of the skier. The turn model enabled to estimate the gliding velocity during turns. However, the estimation error of the gliding velocity becomes larger in the middle of turns. Skiers control skis by generating the forces and moments to make turns. Therefore, we constructed a new turn model using the forces and moments in this study. The analysis results for the new turn model indicated the quantitative relation between the transverse component of the gliding velocity and the vertical control force and the moment around the traveling direction of the skier. Furthermore, the analysis results for the new turn model represented the characteristics of carving turns in more detail than the previous turn model. The analysis method can be used for the evaluation of skier's skill.
