Abstract

In the vibration cutting system, the recommended cutting speed range is about one third or less of the critical cutting speed. Over the recommended cutting speed range, the processing accuracy will easily deteriorate due to abnormal vibration. On the other hand, in the field of electric circuits, researches are under way to suppress the generation region of chaotic vibration by applying weak harmonic perturbation to fundamental vibration. In this research, we try to suppress abnormal vibration by applying weak harmonic perturbation on vibration cutting system. Specifically, we develop an experimental device capable of superimposing harmonic components on tool vibration of vibration cutting, and we confirm the effectiveness of harmonic by examining the surface roughness and the workpiece displacement. We carry out experiments with varying the cutting speed, and show that the deterioration in surface roughness are suppressed by weak harmonic perturbation. That is, it is considered that abnormal vibrations occurring in the machining region exceeding the recommended cutting speed in the vibration cutting system could be suppressed by harmonics.
