Abstract

In recent years, liquid overflow phenomenon in a large storage tank due to an earthquake has occurred and has attracted attention. However, there are still few previous studies dealing with liquid overflow, its characteristics hasn’t been investigated in detail. In this paper, to understand the relation between excitation and liquid overflow, Experiment and analysis focusing on two-dimensional liquid overflow when horizontal excitation is applied to a rectangular tank are conducted. Experiments were conducted by using model tanks with different sidewall heights. Also, the measurement method using image analysis can measure the time history of liquid overflow volume. Maximum liquid displacement point is greatly shifted from the sidewall toward the center of the tank during liquid overflowing. In the analysis, the present work proposed a virtual wall model assuming that a virtual wall exists at that position. Furthermore, nonlinear sloshing analysis with overflowing liquid was performed using the virtual wall model and an overflow model assuming that a certain percentage of the liquid over the upper part of the sidewall overflows. The validity of the present analysis was confirmed by experiments.
