Abstract

The steering torque is one of the most important information for a driver because it influences the maneuver of a driver. The characteristics of the steering torque is affected by the mechanical elements of the steering system like the torsional stiffness, the inertia of a steering wheel and the mechanical friction. In this study, the friction characteristics in a steering system is examined with a newly developed steering torque simulator. In this steering torque simulator, the LuGre model is used as a friction model of the steering system. The performance of the developed steering torque simulator was investigated under several conditions of the friction characteristics.
