Abstract

Rotary ventricular assist devices (VADs) are leading successful progress of heart failure treatment. Recently, pediatric VAD development has been strongly required and non-contact impeller suspension techniques is a key to achieve durable and biocompatible pediatric VADs. This study has been developed an axial gap type self-bearing motor with 5-degrees of freedom (-DOF) control for next generation pediatric VAD which can completely levitate a spinning rotor impeller without mechanical contact. In this paper, dynamic suspension performance of the ultra-compact 5-DOF controlled self-bearing motor is presented. The developed 5-DOF controlled self-bearing motor is 22 mm in diameter and 35 mm in height. The pediatric VAD consists of the self-bearing motor and a centrifugal blood pump. Frequency response of the magnetic suspension system of the developed motor was firstly evaluated. And then, hydraulic performance and magnetic suspension performance during pump operation were investigated with closed loop circulation circuit. The developed motor indicated well frequency response and dynamic suspension performance in required pump operation.
