Abstract

Overflow due to sloshing has become an important topic for the safety assessment of structures such as oil tanks and fuel pools. This paper focuses on two-dimensional sloshing in a rectangular container to clarify the basic characteristics of overflow phenomena due to sloshing. This paper aims to introduce an overflow estimation formula and propose a new overflow estimation method. The proposed overflow estimation formula relates two dimensionless quantities, which consist of a liquid surface displacement, an excitation amplitude, an excitation frequency, and an overflow rate(an overflow volume par a unit time). The coefficients used in the overflow estimation formula are determined by the experiment. By combining the equations of motion of the liquid surface displacement, which are derived by the conventional mode analysis under the assumption that an overflow does not occur, and the proposed overflow estimation formula, the overflow volume of the liquid was estimated. The validity of the overflow estimation method proposed in this study was discussed by comparing the estimated overflow volume and the experimental results.
