Abstract

Since large flexible structures vibrate mainly at low frequencies, it is difficult to apply magnetostrictive energy harvesting technology that depends on vibration velocity. A conventional magnetostrictive harvesting method typically utilizes a half rectifier circuit to passively harvest electrical energy. In this study, we proposed a switching control energy harvesting method using an electric circuit incorporating magnetostrictive transducers and electronic switches. With an appropriate switching control strategy, more electrical energy can be harvested from low frequency vibrating structures. A 10-bay truss structure simulating a large flexible structure was used to validate the feasibility of the proposed method. Through numerical simulations and experiments under the low frequency vibration, the proposed method exhibited better electrical energy harvesting performance than the conventional method.
