Abstract
This paper reports a conception of hierarchical optimization method for layout design. After reviewing the mapping between decomposition methods under the trend of multidisciplinary design optimization and complexity of layout design problems, the promises and challenges in applying hierarchical decomposition to layout design, which is typical of combinatorial optimization problems, are described. The nature and modes of interactions between the whole layout of the whole system and the partial layouts of partial subsystems are characterized, and a coordination scheme is tentatively investigated based on them. Its applicability to layout design of high-density packaging products and issues to be challenged are discussed.
