Abstract
The research issues of life cycle design include dematerialization of products and deployment of product service systems, which are common to the research issues of service engineering. On the other hand, stronger constraints are imposed on life cycle engineering than on service engineering ; that is, coexistence of environmental consciousness and economical profitability, which ultimately aims at the sustainable society. This paper compares service engineering with life cycle engineering and discusses commonality and difference between them. The difference mainly comes from the fact that, on the one hand, life cycle engineering is a mission-oriented engineering but, on the other hand, service engineering is not.
