Abstract
Diverse satisfactory design ideas of form and structure must be obtained under the constraint of unclear design conditions in conceptual and preliminary design. Designers depend on either their experience or their knowledge for obtaining diverse ideas. We focused attention on the concept of emergence seen by the life system, and have advanced the research for engineering support of the design based on this concept. In this paper, we show the position of emergent design and optimum design in the design process and the possibility of emergent design as the design method. And, we described the outline of the emergent design system by the use of cellular automata that build in the mechanism of the Morphogenesis of Organism. Moreover, we show the directionality of this system to perform a more global solution search.
