Abstract
Transient response of a circular cylinder in vortex-induced vibration,VIV,with periodical external force is investigated by experiment and Computation Fluid Dynamics(CFD).Transient behavior of the vibration amplitude of the circular cylinder is significantly affected by the initial phase different between the vibration and the external force, and the final vibration behavior is affected by frequency and magnitude of the external force. The vibration frequency of VIV is synchronized with the frequency of the external force under specific condition. The experimental result shows a fluctuation in the vibration amplitude which is caused by interaction between natural frequency affected by the added mass effect and external force.
