Abstract

The dynamic motion of single bubbles rising in a hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble emulsion polymer (HASE) solution with pH = 9.0 and pH = 11 is experimentally examined. In this study, we focus on the bubble shape and microstructures at the interface depending on pH level. In the experiment, HASE solutions with almost the same rheological properties are prepared for each pH level. In terms of the global shape of the bubble, the formation of threadlike long trailing edges at the rear or edges of the bubble is confirmed for both the pH levels. From microscopic observations, it is also confirmed that microstructures emerge from gas-liquid interfaces of threadlike parts for both the pH levels. From detailed comparison for experimental results for both the pH levels, it is found that the global bubble shape and microstructures are similar but different depending on the pH levels, even if HASE solutions have almost the same rheological properties.
