Abstract
The cavity entrance shape and spray impinging position have significant influence on the mixture distribution, combustion and emission. In this study the mixture distribution was visualized in an engine with transparent cylinder and piston. To investigate the influence of mixture distribution the combustion pressure and emission was measured in an actual engine. It was found that the spray impingement below the lip in a sharp lip results low HC and smoke emission due to better confinement of spray in the cavity.
