Techniques to improve visibility of windsocks that are installed alongside highways to impart crosswind information, with the objective of alerting drivers with greater accuracy are studied. To that end, we conducted (1) a field study, (2) interviews, (3) viewpoint measurements and (4) wind tunnel tests. Results showed potential for improving windsock visibility and recognition of wind direction by (a) changing current windsock colors, (b) adding markers indicating wind direction, (c) changing the windsock’s fluttering area by changing stiffness of the windsock.
