Abstract
The full field measurement of strain in off-axis specimens of a unidirectional carbon/epoxy laminate during tensile loading is performed for different fiber orientations and specimen sizes. Static tension tests are performed on one-, two- and three-dimensional geometrically similar notched specimens of the unidirectional CFRP laminate, respectively. The three-dimensional digital image correlation (DIC) method with two CCD cameras is used to measure the displacement fields of the gauge parts of off-axis specimens during each tension test until rupture occurs, and the results are used to calculate the in-plane strain components. Non-uniform strain field in off-axis specimen that depends on fiber orientation is successfully visualized by DIC. The DIC visualization suggests that the strain field in the gauge part of geometrically similar off-axis specimen is similar, and thus small specimens may be used to identify the off-axis deformation behavior of the unidirectional CFRP laminate.
