Abstract

Jet impingement cooling has been found to be a viable option for removing concentrated heat load. Open-cell metal foam, by virtue of its open pores and high surface-to-volume ratio, could enhance the fluid heat transfer coefficients. This paper deals with the experimental investigation of the thermal performance achieved using air-jet impingement cooling of a hot surface embedded with a metal foam.

The height of the foam has been varied for the assessment of the thermal performance of the flat surface. The experiments have been carried out for the different Reynolds numbers (12000, 23000, and 48500) and jet-to-plate spacing (3-7). The Nusselt number has been calculated to assess the thermal performance of the flat plate embedded with the metal foam. The result shows that the height of foam greatly influences thermal performance. Also, higher cooling is achieved at a higher jet velocity and lower nozzle-to-plate distance. The effect of nozzle shape is significant only in the stagnation region. Also, the metal foam height significantly affects the heat dissipation rate.
