Abstract
In this work, an introduction is given to the problems related to low calorific value (LCV) gas combustion. In particular the combustor design and fuel specifications are addressed. Tar concentration in the fuel gas is chosen as research topic. For this research, experiments are performed with a downscaled ALSTOM Power counter-swirling gas turbine combustor of 1(MW)_<th>. The higher heating value of the fuel of nitrogen-diluted natural gas was 10MJ/m^3_n and pressures were 1.5 and 3.2 (bar)_a. The air and fuel are preheated to 350℃ and 250℃. The exhaust temperature is kept constant at maximum allowed turbine inlet temperature of 1080K. The temperature and flue gas composition are measured in the exhaust of the combustor. The heated fuel gas is doped with naphthalene in concentrations ranging from 0-7g/m^3_n. In these experiments, a rise in carbon monoxide emission is found when naphthalene is injected in the fuel gas at both 1.5 and 3.2 (bar)_a. Also, particles are found on the filter material but only initial investigation of these samples could be performed.
