Abstract

Carbonization and torrefaction have been performed in more biomass energy utilization as promoting the renewable energy. These treatments make the energy density of woody biomass increase. So, it is required the measurement technology which can reveal the fuel characteristics of carbonized biomass in manufacturing plants, because the good fuel char would be produced under the optimal condition. Then, we develop the evaluation method of fuel characteristics by measuring the color of carbonized biomass. In this study, we conducted the carbonization of woody biomass. And we evaluated the characteristics of carbonized biomass on elements, heating value and surface color. As the results, yield of carbonized biomass was decreased and heating value was increased in changing the carbonization temperature at 448 – 573 K. So, the measuring the color of carbonized biomass could be a one of the evaluation methods to reveal the fuel characteristics, because there was the positive correlation between heating value and color distance.
