Abstract

This paper presents an experimental verification of a wideband vibration energy harvester with a nonlinear oscillator using leaf springs and stoppers in terms of the frequency response and power generation performance through steady-state excitation tests. A response stabilization control using negative impedance converter (NIC) has been successfully introduced to destabilize the undesirable low-energy response in the resonance band and make the high-energy response globally stable. However, since the response stabilization control requires electric energy to give a self-excitation capability to the nonlinear oscillator, the energy consumption by the control circuit is a critical problem. In this study, the energy consumption by the control circuit has been experimentally evaluated while it is activated in response to impulsive disturbances, and compared with the power generation capacity of the harvester. Is has been concluded that most of the energy consumption in the circuit comes from the energy loss in the operational amplifier in the NIC circuit, and the total energy consumption can be retrieved by the energy harvesting for 20 seconds.
