Abstract

This paper gives a short overview of the main mechanisms leading to tooth flank fracture which have been investigated in different research projects. Furthermore, a simplified method for assessing the risk of tooth flank fracture based on a high-sophisticated, material-physically based calculation approach is presented. This method is the basis for an intended ISO technical specification for calculation of tooth flank fracture load capacity of case hardened gears which is actually in preparation. For both calculation models, the influence factors are the same and are therefore explained in detail. Based on the available draft technical specification, parameter studies on the load capacity calculation regarding the damage mechanism tooth flank fracture from literature have been evaluated and an additional study has been performed in order to identify characteristic influence factors and to validate the practical applicability of the simplified approach.
