Abstract

To realize much higher load capacity of gears with asymmetric tooth profiles, a tooth profile design that is not restricted by the conventional tooth profile is investigated. Generally, since the direction of power transfer is one way, using an asymmetrical tooth profile is one solution to improve load capacity. The authors have proposed a strength simulation method that considers defect size and variation of defect location. In this report, the strength simulation was applied to a gear with an asymmetrical tooth profile. The distribution of bending stress by highest point of single-tooth contact load was calculated for each tooth. Stress distribution caused by neighbor tooth loading was also obtained. Furthermore, distribution of residual stress was also simulated by FEM. Since the pressure stress by neighbor tooth loading is large, strength of tooth with small width of tooth space is low.
