Abstract

In this research, authors proposed a new type of conical involute gear, named “Hyper Conical Gear”. The Hyper Conical Gear can transmit high power because having both the increased tooth surface strength and the increased bending strength. The aim of this research is to obtain the allowable contact strength of the Hyper Conical Gear with the tooth bearing test. First, authors introduce dimensions of test gears and the Hertzian stress of the Hyper Conical Gear. Next, the development of the testing machine for contact strength and the testing procedure. For various torque can be loaded, the power circulating method is taken into the testing machine. The testing machine is driven continuously 24 hours to 107 times of contact. Three times tests had executed, but tooth surfaces were not destroyed under 2 GPa. This research opens the way to the practical design of the Hyper Conical Gear on the marine transmissions.
