Abstract

We have developed a new type of tactile display using electrostatic force which occurs between a thin film slider and electrodes. The slider is connected to a linear encoder. By applying voltages to the electrodes according to the slider position, the electrostatic tactile display can simulate fine textures. Furthermore, the electrostatic tactile display can stimulate a fingertip locally because the slider film is very thin. In this paper, the construction of the device and the two types of experiments to evaluate the performance of this device are described. One experiment aimed to verify that this device can display various roughness and the other aimed to verify that this device can provide localized stimulus.
