Abstract
Titanium and titanium alloys have been successfully used for many applications. For these applications, it is necessary to process titanium and other materials. On the other hand, joining is understood to be one of the most important processes involved in making products. Many joining processes have been established and employed in industrial fields. Of these processes, brazing in particular is useful for the joining complex or precision parts. Brazing using resistive heating such as spot welding equipment is called spot brazing. Currently, spot brazing can be used in industrial situations without academic understanding. This investigation has lead to farther insight into the interfacial reaction that occurs during spot brazing. CP-Ti and CP-Ni were selected as a base metal in this study. Five types of filler metals were used in this study. One is the clad type Ti-Cu-Ni foil made of titanium core with Cu-Ni alloy coating. Others are two kinds of Ni-based brazing filler foils (BNi-2 and BNi-6), Ag-based filler foil (BAg-8) and Cu-P filler foil. All brazed joint were made by spot brazing. Brazing was done in an Ar atmosphere. Single lap joint was selected in order to estimate mechanical property of joint by tensile strength test. Cross-section of brazed joint was observed and analyzed by SEM or EDX. A good enough brazing joint by spot brazing with using each filler metals was obtained. Forming of several reaction layers at the interface was observed.
