Abstract
The effects of post quenching of TiN coated carbon tool steel substrate on the mechanical properties of TiN film were investigated. A specimen which substrate was quenched after TiN coating was prepared, and the mechanical properties of its TiN film were compared with those of TiN film coated on the quenched substrate. Although the residual stress and the hardness of the post quenched TiN film were a little smaller than those of TiN film coated on the quenched substrate, the much higher adhesive strength was obtained by the post quenching. It was considered that the improved adhesive strength was derived by the increase of the thickness of the mixing layer between the film and the substrate because of the elevated temperature in the post quenching procedure.
