Abstract

There is an Urushi crafts technique in Japan. Maki-e is one of the decoration techniques in Urushi crafts. Various patterns are drawn by Urushi and metallic powder. This study aimed to examine a relationship between level of skill and state of production in polishing process of Maki-e technique. A color measurement, gloss measurement, surface roughness test and electromyography of right interosseus muscle were conducted in this study. As these results, there wasn't so much of a difference about gloss and surface roughness between expert and non-expert craftspeople. Expert turned the Maki-e surface more yellow than the non-expert, and worked the right interosseus muscle rhythmically.
