We focus on the frictional heat generated on the tool during the lathe processing. Thermal fatigue due to the frictional heat is one of several causes of breaking the cutting tool. The frictional heat can be calculated by the chip discharge speed, the contact length between the chip and the tool, and the friction force generated on the tool rake face. Therefore, these are measured using a high-speed camera and a tool dynamometer. The heat flux flowing into the tool is obtained. The temperature of the tool cutting edge is evaluated by finite element analysis from the obtained data.
