Abstract

The purpose of this study was to reduce the calculation cost of diesel engine with variable valve timing mechanism (VVT). Diesel engines are often used in cargo trucks because to their high thermal efficiency. However, it produces a lot of emissions such as NOx and soot. Therefore, various studies are being researched to reduce exhaust emissions. One of them is combustion control using VVT. By using VVT, there are PCCI (Premixed Charged Compression Ignition) by LIVC(Late Intake Valve Closing) and internal EGR by EVODI(Exhaust Valve Opening During Intake).

When these are calculated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics),many cycles need to be calculated because combustion changes significantly under the influence of other cycles. Therefore, it becomes a high calculated load and is not realistic. Based on these facts, in this study, by coordinating 1D-CFD (1 Dimensional CFD) and 3D-CFD (3 Dimensional CFD), multi-cycles calculation was performed in 1D-CFD, and the result was used as the initial conditions of 3D-CFD as show Fig.1.
