The effects of phosphorus and calcium on the refinement of Mg2Si crystallized in molten magnesium alloys were investigated. To clarify the effects of these elements on the growth behavior of Mg2Si during the solidification process, Mg2Si was coarsely crystallized by slow cooling of the molten metal, and the behavior of phosphorus and calcium was investigated in detail. From the results of EPMA surface analysis of the alloy, P and Ca were detected from the center of the Mg2Si particles, and P was detected from the particles indicating that these acted to refine and granulate the Mg2Si.
