Abstract

In the present study, elastoplastic stress analysis around an internally pressurized cavity was conducted based on an expanding cavity model, and the exact expressions for stress intensity factor (SIF) and crack opening displacement (COD) of a penny-shaped crack emanating from the cavity were derived. The obtained expressions were so lengthy and complicated that their practical application would be tedious. From this reason, the simple SIF and COD equations were obtained by the approximation of the SIF distribution. It is considered that the proposed equations are available in the estimation of SIF and COD for radial cracks formed by the Vickers indentation in brittle materials.
