Abstract
Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) was ground in order to investigate the grinding mechanism. GC36,SD230 and CBN230 wheels were used. The SD230 wheel which was recently developed consisted of porous vitrified bond. The CBN230 wheel was also the same type. The main results obtained are as follows : (1) It was found that the most appropriate wheel speed was 25 m/s among the wheel speeds of 12.5,25 and 37.5 m/s with using the GC36 wheel. (2) The surface roughness after the one pass down cut grinding with the SD230P50V wheel was better than that of the CBN230P50V. (3) The ground surface was thinly covered with the resin. And it was found that most carbon fibers were cut perpendicularly to the fiber axis. (4) The scraped carbon fibers were observed at some places because the grain could cut the fibers directly.
