Abstract
To reduce the tool wear on the cutting edge of end mills for milling the bottom face of scroll wraps, experiments were carried out on the coolant supply system and the tool geometry. The following conclusions can be drawn : (1) The wear rate of the flank wear was reduced to approximately 1/50 by supplying coolant to the cutting edge through the center hole of the tool at a cutting speed of 230m/min (V=230m/min). (2) A back clearance angle of 5 degrees is optimal for abrasive resistance in the turning operation. (3) The wear rate of the corner edge was reduced to 1/6 when the back clearance angle was changed from 15 degrees to 5 degrees.
