Abstract
Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) system has been widely applied to treatment of life-threatening heart failure. The therapeutic options with MCS are rapidly growing with the advent of compact blood pump system with high endurance and good biocompatibility. We have been developing two kinds of MCS sytem that utilize non-contacting bearing system which essentially enhance antithrombogenicity of the system. One is the extracorporeal centrifugal blood pump which is designed for a long-term extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The other is the compact axial flow pump for an implantable ventricular assist system. Both systems have demonstrated good biocompatility through chronic animal experiments conducted in our laboratory. This study summarizes the current status of our blood pump development projects.
