Abstract
Large-eddy simulations of a fire plume with flames and a buoyant plume without flames are performed. The validity of the simulations is ascertained, and the effects of flame structure on characteristics of a plume are then examined. Concerning the validity, the use of grid systems finer than twentieth part of the fire characteristic length leads the simulations to general agreement with the experiments. The existence of flame raises mean temperature and turbulent intensity, and enhances entrainment efficiency in the flame region, while it rarely affects characteristics in the plume region. Moreover, it is suggested that the enhancement of entrainment efficiency is closely connected with the increase in horizontal motion induced by flames.
