Abstract
In the present work, characteristics of liquid jet discharged to gas environment was studied experimentally. The working liquid was water and the jet direction was vertical downward. The nozzle shape and the back pressure were changed parametrically and the characteristics of the jet atomization and the enlargement of jet area were investigated through observation using a high speed camera. It was found that the nozzle shape has significant influence on the jet area and atomization characteristics. In particular, expansion nozzle enhanced the jet area enlargement and the liquid jet atomization. Empirical correlation for the jet area was developed from the experimental data accumulated in this work.
