Abstract

Vehicle noise problems have been more serious around the world in recent years. As tires are the major source of vehicle noise, tire noise regulations will be strengthened. It is crucial for tire manufacturers to improve tire noise. Tire noise consists of several noise sources. This paper focuses on tread impact noise, which is generated when a tread contacts the road. To clarify the mechanism of the noise, three different kinds of tires with different tread block angles and only one tread block were used in order to examine the characteristics of the noise. From the experiment results, a proportional relationship between sound pressure and acceleration of the tire tread surface is found. Angle between the tread block and contour at the leading edge of the contact should be increased to reduce the noise.
