Abstract

In other to use C/SiC composites made by Si infiltration method for a reusable rocket engine nozzle, its mechanical properties and oxidation resistance were examined by the C/SiC bundle composite. C/SiC bundle composite, composed by one single carbon fiber bundle and SiC matrix successfully produced through Si infiltration method and PIP method. Carbon fiber reinforced phenolic resin (CFRP) with single carbon fiber bundle was also made to obtain initial fiber strength. The strengths of C/SiC composites made by Si impregnation and PIP were degraded into less than 1/10 of CFRP. No fiber pull-out could be seen on the fracture surface of two types of C/SiC and fracture surfaces were flat. The main cause of strength degradation is considered to be strong adherence to carbon fiber and SiC. First trial to produce interphase layers on carbon fibers were conducted with sol-gel process method. Tensile strength of carbon fiber after interphase coating was almost 1/2 of the original. The interphase coating itself degrade the fiber strength however, the strength degradation was much smaller than uncoated C/SiC.
