Abstract

In this study, cylindrical type 3D printer by fused deposition modeling method is proposed. This proposed devise is particularly suitable for modeling a cylindrical shaped object having overhanging parts as represented by Archimedes' screw. The proposed devise allows the molding of a cylindrical object without support materials by adopting a cylindrical print bed. The print bed and the extruder are cooperatively moved according to a molding algorithm. In this paper, first, basic operation algorithm of Archimedes' screw modeling is shown. Next, it is reported that the molding of the screw is possible by the suggestion device and algorithm. However, in the first test phase, there are problems in molding accuracy. Therefore improvements for these problems are carried out in both hardware and software. As a result of improvement, the molding precision of the Archimedes' screw was improved markedly. In particular, an improvement for the cogging of the stepping motor is to contribute to the good modeling accuracy. The improvement of this molding precision largely reduces the time required for finish for parts.
