Abstract

Sound generated by lips is studied for understandings of biological sound. The sound is like buzzing. It's a sound which is generated when a trumpet player blows breath to a mouth piece. The dominant frequency of the pulsatile jet rejected by lips in vibration of opening and shutting could be obtained by the force balance between the mouth pressure and closing force of lips. The sound and vibration of the lips model made by konjak jelly are observed experimentally by a microphone with a high directivity and a high-speed CCD camera. The generation mechanism of the sound from lips is considered by comparing with the data obtained by our model. The dominant frequency of the pulsatile jet is determined by the vibration of the model. And the vibration is determined by the natural frequency of konjak. The higher frequency which the pulsatile jet includes is measured from side of the model, and is because of a digon shape of the nozzle of the model.
