Abstract

Considering the challenges on an engine system in reduction of environmental impact point of view, reducing CO2 emissions and meeting environmental noise criteria are issues to be solved. In automotive industry, these issues encourage an engineering innovation as a duty of complying with the regulations. As the technologies of one of the solution for these issues, improving engine thermal efficiency with combustion control coming along with rapid cylinder pressure rise is drawn increasing attention. Because of the combustion control described above potentially conduce to high engine noise level, a research for improving engine noise is continue advanced at the same time. In fact thermal efficiency and engine noise are trade-off relationship, it is important that improvement of both issues should be studied in a comprehensive manner. This paper gives general explanation for noise and vibration phenomenon and for those measurements, analysis methodologies and countermeasures on diesel engines especially its combustion noise.
