Abstract

The Magnus effect gives rise to a circular cylinder that rotates around an axis, perpendicular to the uniform flow. This study focuses on the use of the Magnus effect to rotate a circular cylinder with fins instead of a blade. The rotor of the magnus wind turbine generates electricity by being rotated by the lift generated by the rotational of each cylinder. The feature of this turbine is to obtain high lift from a low wind speed range: lift is 4 to 5 times a normal propeller-type turbine. However, it is not necessarily optimized in the parameters such as the rotation speed of the circular cylinder, the shape of the fin, with fins or without fins on the blade, and the mounting angle. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of each parameter on the magnus effect by CFD analysis of the flow field around the rotating cylinder.
