Abstract

Industrial llubricants are manufactured by adding multiple additives such as oilliness agents to base oil such as mineral oil, and oils for various purposes exist. In practice, it is necessary to test and evaluate the performance of the lubricant. The characteristics of lubricants under boundary lubrication regime are tested by sliding test, pendulum friction test, tests by AFM, adhesion measurement and surface observation, evaluation of additive adsorption by QCM method, etc. In particular, in the micro-reciprocation sliding test, it is considered that the performance under boundary lubrication conditions can be evaluated for the effect of the oilliness agents. In practice, it is difficult to simply identify the location of the cause when the required performance of the machine cannot be obtained. Therefore, in this study, in addition to the micro-reciprocation sliding test in the characteristic evaluation test of the lubricants additive, the characteristic evaluation of the lubricants additive adhering to the metal surface is carried out using the force curve and horizontal force mode in the air. The purpose is to investigate whether it is possible to conduct a simple characterization of lubricants additives. Specifically, the friction was measured by AFM using lubricants on the sliding surface of the machine tool, and the friction coefficients were compared. As a result, it was possible to evaluate the lubricants additive by the value of the coefficient of friction and its variation, suggesting the possibility that AFM in air could be used as an evaluation method.
